International TVET Conference-2016 Press Release

03-10-2016: Skill development and technical training are the key success factors to any country's socio-economic development. We can change the current scenario and tackle our challenges through skill development. This was said by the State Minister for Federal Education & Professional Training, Engr. M. Baligh-ur-Rehman while addressing the first-ever “International TVET Conference-Pakistan 2016”organized by National Vocational & Technical Training Commission, here on Monday. The conference was attended by a large number of industrialists, heads of training institutes, ambassadors, diplomats and the delegates of more than fifteen countries including China, United Kingdom, Germany, Australia, Turkey, South Korea, Belarus, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Japan, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Tajikistan. We must shift our focus to Technical and Vocational Education in order to meet the demands of enterprises which require a skilled workforce and of the people who require quality training so that they can become economically productive, he added. The minister stated that Pakistan has made remarkable achievements to improve the delivery of the TVET and expressed the resolve that the present government is committed to equip the country’s youth with employable skills. He commended the Executive Director NAVTTC, Mr. Zulfiqar Ahmad Cheema, for organizing this Conference and bringing together experts and stakeholders from within Pakistan as well as abroad to discuss and share their views on an issue that is of considerable importance for not only Pakistan but the whole world. The Executive Director NAVTTC, Mr. Zulfiqar Cheema, while addressing the conference said that its unfortunate that we lost more than half century without focusing on the most important sector of the skill development. He, while welcoming the foreign delegates, said that you would yourself see that Pakistan is much more beautiful and safer than it is portraid by biased media. He briefly narrated reform measures and initiatives taken by NAVTTC while highlighting the importance of International Conference. He said different countries have excelled in different sectors, we would learn from them, we would follow the best practices in the world, we would replicate the success models in our country. He was of the view that it would go a long way to improve not onbly the quality of training but the chances of employability of our youth in the international market. He said skill development is the master key for poverty alleviation and it is the gateway to peace and properity. German ambassador to Pakistan, Ms. Ina Lepel, while addressing the TVET Conference said that we would continue supporting the TVET reform system in Pakistan. Mayor of Islamabad, Mr. Ansar Aziz, while addressing the gathering, welcomed the foreign delegates and expressed hope that they would enjoy the exquisite beauty of Islamabad and hospitality of the people of Pakistan. skill development can bring peace and prosperity in the whole region. This conference shall open new vistas and new windows for our youth’s employment in the international market. Pakistan is blessed with enormous resources and potentialities; we often overlook the greatest of all blessings - our human capital; our youth. To reap the benefits of these resources and particularly the demographic dividend, the country needs a demand- driven and competitive TVET system. He said that NAVTTC is making strides in capacity building and capacity expansion programs for the youth to bring reforms in the current TVET system in Pakistan. He further added that holding international TVET Conference is but one of many steps to promote technical and vocational education in Pakistan and it will go a long way in opening doors to durable and long lasting prosperity for individuals and for the nation. He said that this conference will be instrumental in identifying the issues related to provision of Technical Vocational Education and the measures needed to address them. NAVTTC has trained around 225,000 young men and women so far and currently 50,000 trainees are being trained annually in over 60 trades in 130 technical and vocational institutes across the country, under Prime Minister’s Youth Skill Development Phase-III. On this occasion, the mayor of Islamabad, Mr. Ansar Aziz, and the German Ambassador to Pakistan, Ms. Ina Lepel, also welcomed the foreign guests. They appreciated the steps taken by NAVTTC for revival of TVET in Pakistan and reiterated their full support in this regard. The conference offered a platform to promote exchange of best practices, experiences and knowledge within the international and regional context for developing a better TVET system in Pakistan besides creating wider awareness on the TVET sector reform with a view to present it as a national political priority to the international audience. Major objectives include development of curriculum at par with international standards, generation of employment opportunities for youth, and to improve strategies for skill development in Pakistan and achieve economic growth and sustainable development of the country. It provides an opportunity where the participants can learn about TVET Sector of Pakistan and can share their best practices, comments, suggestions, inputs and will be in a better position to interact with each other for a better coordination and collaboration in future in various TVET activities taken up within the regional and global context. Delegates from UK, Malaysia, China, Germany, Sri Lanka, South Korea and Australia apprised the audience about the TVET improvements in the their countries and how far they have advanced in bringing reforms in this sector. People from various walks of life, including ambassadors, diplomats, industrialists, educationists, students, bureaucrats and government officials, were present at the conference.
